Description:
Comprehensive ecological community patch map for the Rensselaer Plateau. One of two companion layers along with community line features. Ecological communities are basic ecological units representing an assemblage of specific plants and animals that repeat across a landscape.
Data Provided By:
Conceptualization: Rensselaer Plateau Ecological Features Working Group (David M. Hunt, Ecological Intuition & Medicine, with assistance from and review by Nick Conrad, Rensselaer Land Trust and New York Natural Heritage Program).

Delineation/Aerial Photography Interpretation: David M. Hunt, Ecological Intuition & Medicine.

Digitization: Sarah Parks, (Amala Consulting), with cleanup and minor refinements by David M. Hunt, Ecological Intuition & Medicine.

Attribute Population: David M. Hunt, Ecological Intuition & Medicine, and Sarah Parks, (Amala Consulting).

Funding provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Hudson River Estuary Program and the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance.
Content date:
Identification and delineation of communities was based primarily on 2004 color infrared digital aerial photography. The dataset is likely to have an accuracy of 90% or more for several years to several decades (past to future), and estimating an average of about 25 years past and future. The patches are mid-term ecological features, sometimes strongly altered by individual land use (e.g., forest clearing, selective timber harvest) both in terms of the community type and the community patch boundaries.
