About the Protected Areas Center

Protected areas are the cornerstones around which regional, national and international conservation strategies are developed.  Through protected area designations, lands and waters are set-aside in perpetuity to preserve functioning natural ecosystems, provide refuges for species, and maintain ecological processes.

The Data Basin Protected Areas Center is a place where the world can come together to explore the global significance of protected areas.  Our mission is to centralize critical spatial data on the status of global land and water protection in a forum that allows any user – from the general public to professional land managers – to easily use our inventories for conservation, land management, planning, recreation and other uses.
