Where people and wildlife intersect: prioritizing mitigation of road impacts on wildlife connectivity

Where people and wildlife intersect: prioritizing mitigation of road impacts on wildlife connectivity

About

These layers were developed to provide decision support for prioritizing opportunities to mitigate the impacts of roads on wildlife connectivity in the U.S. Northern Rockies.  They provide spatially explicit information pertaining to:
  • Modeled wildlife connectivity value across major roads
  • Wildlife risk index based on wildlife mortality counts by mile along major roads
  • Occurrence of carnivore mortalities by mile along major roads
  • Interactive decision support tool for exploring alignment of wildlife connectivity risk values
  • Reference layers (study area, major roads, and mile markers)
Based on these layers, we also discuss potential opportunities for diverse stakeholders (including departments of transportation, state and federal land managers, land trusts, citizen groups, and conservation organizations with a variety of missions) to engage in and contribute to the mitigation process, which are highlighted through case studies.

The full report on the project objectives, methods, findings, discussion of mitigation opportunities, and case studies can be downloaded here:

The resources below are metadata records that are housed on the USGS ScienceBase site (https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/) You will not be able to use these data sets directly within Data Basin. However, you can discover the data sets, and for many records, you can download or be linked to a download site for the data. In the future, we will be adding support for importing compatible data directly into Data Basin.
