TNC Power of Place, Columbia Plateau WA

Oct 31, 2022
Description:
Power of Place-West is The Nature Conservancy’s new report that evaluated energy, economic, environmental, and geospatial datapoints to produce the most comprehensive clean energy analysis to date for the 11 Western grid states.
Working with industry-leading energy researchers, we combined best-in-class energy modeling tools with the latest ecosystem and wildlife habitat data to advise the deployment of clean energy infrastructure across the West.

Solar, wind and OSW (Off Shore Wind) Aggregated exclusions. All layers are rasters with a resolution of 250 meters. Values are 1 for exclusion and 0 for not excluded.

Category 1-

Legally protected: Areas with existing legal restrictions against energy development.

Examples: National Wildlife Refuges, National Parks?

Category 2-

Administratively protected: Areas where energy siting requires consultation or triggers a state-level review process to primarily protect ecological values, cultural values, or natural characteristics. This Category includes areas with existing administrative and legal designations by federal or state public agencies where state or federal law requires consultation or review. Lands owned by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that have conservation obligations also included in this Category.

Examples: Critical Habitat for Threatened or Endangered Species, Sage Grouse Priority Habitat Management Areas, vernal pools and wetlands.

Category 3-

High conservation value: Areas with high conservation value as determined through multi-state or ecoregional analysis (e.g., state, federal, academic, NGO) primarily characterizing the ecological characteristics of a location or wildlife corridor. This category may also include lands that have social, economic, or cultural value. Despite their conservation value, these lands typically do not have formal conservation protections.

Examples: Prime Farmland, Important Bird Areas, big game priority habitat and corridors, and much of TNC's Resilient & Connected Network.
