Description:
Comprehensive map of land cover physiognomy (forested areas) on the Rensselaer Plateau based on a detailed standardized classification of ecological community types. derived from a composite of the one ecological community type most likely from each location. Areas with forest cover are derived from patches mapped as forested ecological community types. Forest community types are defined as those areas with 60% or greater canopy cover of trees, with trees being interpreted as single-trunked woody individuals of greater than 5 m tall (Nature Serve/NY Natural Heritage Program). Forest community types identified from the plateau include both natural types (such as the dominant Hemlock-Northern Hardwood Forest) and cultural types (such as Conifer Plantation). Natural types include both climax forest types (such as Hemlock-Northern Hardwood Forest) and successional types (such as Successional Northern Hardwoods). Climax forest types include broadleaf-deciduous, mixed, and needleleaf-evergreen types.

Content date:
Based primarily on 2004 aerial photograph. likely to have an accuracy of 90% or more for several years to several decades (past to future), averaging an estimate of about 25 years past and future. a mid-term ecological feature sometimes strongly altered by land use (e.g., forest clearing), both in terms of the presence and the boundaries of forested areas. see the Rensselaer Plateau Ecology Report, Ecological Communities, Sections NC4-2 and NC11-3.
