- This dataset was developed in 2013 as part of the NOAA-funded Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for the Island of Saipan (2014). The social vulnerability index values range from 26 (dark green) to 72 (red). Higher values indicate greater vulnerability.The dataset illustrates relative levels of social vulnerability to climate impacts among Saipan's villages. The dataset is based on the U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 Census Place Geography and American Community Surveys. All Census Places (villages) for the island of Saipan, CNMI that reported a permanent population/residents were selected from the larger CNMI Census Shapefile. A database containing over 130 fields of data from the 2010 Census and 2005-2009 American Community Surveys was joined to the dataset.The index was developed through consultation of peer-reviewed studies, community workshops, and expert feedback. Index calculations were performed using a weighted overlay of 22 variables, and the results represent the CNMI's first attempt at estimating the exposure and sensitivity of Saipan's population to climate hazards.
