Cold-water Coral Reefs

Map Technical Notes Cold-water corals extracted from version 7.0 of the global 1km raster dataset compiled by the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), 2003. These are almost entirely the same data as were published in (Freiwald et al. 2004) and show point-locations of known cold-water coral communities. Data are derived from field-sampling and there is undoubtedly a strong bias introduced by the sampling procedure. It is likely that many more such communities exist than are recorded here. Where locations occur in tropical waters they are typically in deep waters, but may be relatively close to shallow tropical coral reefs. For further information, email: spatialanalysis@unep-wcmc.org.
