This dataset represents the marine protected areas of Washington state,
as mapped by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Marine
protected areas are designated to preserve, perpetuate, and manage
living marine resources, to provide refuges for stocks, substocks, or
populations of marine species, to protect significant habitats or
species, and to provide research and education areas. Within the
constraints of the management plan developed for the protected area,
certain consumptive uses are permitted. For more information on the

obtained by the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) from the Washington
