- Description:
These data represent a potential Conservation Target for the Working Lands Priority Resource of the PFLCC. This potential Conservation Target, Florida Sandhill Crane, are the resident population of Florida. There is also a migratory population of Sandhill Cranes seen in Florida which are not included in these data and are not considered a species of conservation concern. The potential distribution of Florida Sandhill Cranes includes grasslands and open areas within 3 km of wetlands suitable for foraging. Where the potential distribution corresponds to the Working Lands PR indicates wetlands are in the vicinity.
Although Working Lands are an important component of these birds remaining habitat in Florida, there are many Working Lands that are outside the range of nesting in Florida or are not meant to include vegetation suitable for them. The Working Lands Team has suggested that the Florida Sandhill Crane be included as part of a suite of indicator species, such as the Florida Black Bear and the Eastern Indigo Snake, that utilize additional components of the working landscape. Additionally, we would like to include actual monitoring data and so will continue to seek out additional sources of data.
The map herein has two data layers – one that shows the entire potential distribution for the Florida Sandhill Crane, and t
