Description:
Existing protected areas were identified to determine where existing resource protection and management exists across the Plan Area. Areas outside existing protected areas were considered gaps in protection where the DRECP conservation strategy should focus. This analysis was conducted early in the planning process and yielded two primary categories of existing protected areas: Legislatively and Legally Protected Areas (LLPAs) and Military Expansion Mitigation Lands (MEMLs).

Legislatively and Legally Protected Areas (LLPAs) include Wilderness Areas, National Parks, National Preserves, National Wildlife Refuges, California State Parks, CDFW Conservation Areas (Ecological Reserves and Wildlife Areas), CDFW mitigation and conservation easement areas, privately held conservation areas including mitigation banks and land trust lands, Wilderness Study Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers, National Scenic and Historic Trails.

This dataset was derived from the original DRECP integrative alternatives provided by Dudek. The geometry was simplified slightly in order to improve online performance. The integrated alternative shapefiles represent the proposed Plan-wide action alternatives, as described in Volume II of the Public Draft DRECP (2014). The original DRECP integrated alternative shapefiles can be downloaded directly from the DRECP website at the following URL: http://www.drecp.org/draftdrecp/files/GIS/
