The map showing the amount of water withdrawn each year by country was produced from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s Aquastat. It shows the annual quantity of freshwater withdrawn for agricultural, industrial and domestic purposes by country. This includes renewable freshwater resources as well as eventual over-extraction of renewable groundwater or withdrawal of fossil groundwater and eventual use of desalinated water or treated wastewater. It does not include other categories of water use, such as for cooling of power plants, mining, recreation, navigation, fisheries, etc., all of which have a very low net consumption rate. Data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. 2008. Aquastat. An online database: http://www.fao.org/nr/water/aquastat/dbases/index.stm. (Accessed Sep. 4, 2008).
