Description:
Trench map citation: Based on NGDC and ESRI 2004. Map data source: NGDC and ESRI. 2004. Global Digital Elevation Model (ETOPO2). National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) and ESRI, Redlands, California, USA. Digital media. Map Technical Notes A global bathymetric map (NGDC and ESRI 2004) was used to plot ocean areas with depths greater than 6,500m are included. Such depths are only found in isolated plate-margin trenches. This isolation has created high levels of endemism, with species restricted to single trenches only. Even at these great depths there is further stratification of communities by depth and these trench communities are not populated by homogeneous faunas.
