This data set is of three mobile acoustic surveys completed on July 6, 8, and 11, 2020 within and around Kimberley, BC, Canada. Data collection was part of long-term monitoring of bats in urban and non-urban environments. Transect 1 is an NABat transect crossing urban and non-urban areas, transect 2 is within an urban area (the City of Kimberley) only, and transect 3 cross non-urban areas including rural communities, cropland, ranches, and Crown land (primarily forest).
Bat calls were detected using an ultrasonic acoustic module (Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro; Wildlife Acoustics Inc.; Maynard, MA, USA). The module was plugged into an IOS device (iPad mini 4; Apple Inc., Cupertino, CA, USA) and the microphone, oriented at a 45° angle, was affixed to the top of a vehicle using a bracket (Echo Meter Touch Car Bracket; Wildlife Acoustics). Surveys started 45-60 minutes after sunset (22:30-22:50) and ranged in duration from 60-90 minutes. Transects were driven at a speed of ~30 km/hr while calls and location data were recorded within the Echo Meter Touch app. Each transect occurred on separate nights with similar weather conditions at the start (16-19°C and no wind or precipitation).
Data were analyzed for bat activity levels and species/species groups present. Files containing bat calls were manually vetted in Kaleidoscope Pro (Version 5.3.9; Wildlife Acoustics Inc.). The number of bat call sequences within each file were counted and used to represent bat activity levels. Species were identified where possible, otherwise species/unknown groupings were used.
