WAHCAP team developed a core model for cougar using the O'Malley et al. (2024) habitat suitability (HS) model. The HS model was derived from a random forest model using GPS data from 476 individuals across 20 study sites in the western USA and Canada and remotely sensed landscape data. We ran a connectivity analysis using this layer to define core areas. We used the WAHCAP model instead of a statewide cougar corridor model developed by WWHCWG since the WAHCAP model was based on actual species data as well as more up-to-date environmental data. We refined the WAHCAP cougar core habitat model by adjusting the minimum habitat value per reviewer's specifications.
I work in my agency's program that focuses on ecosystem and landscape conservation. My position entails developing science-based publications that help guide land use planning decisions and particularly decisions made by jurisdictions all across Washington State.
