This raster layer summarizes California Fish and Wildlife groundfish fisheries ex-vessel value from 1981-2005. Monetary value (US$) was derived from commercial fisheries catches reported on landing receipts (also known as ‘fish tickets’) and are recorded by fish dealers or processors at the port of landing. Summary catch statistics include market category, year, pounds landed, and spatial block. The time series includes species that are historically and/or currently important to the California fisheries economy and were binned into 4 broad groups based on depth: 0-200m-- sanddabs, flounders, soles, California halibut, cabezon, scorpionfish, other sculpins, and leopard sharks; 0-400m—lingcod, petrale sole, pacific halibut, and north pacific hake (whiting); 0-600m-- all rockfish spp.; 100-1200m—sablefish, spiny dogfish, Rex and Dover soles, and thornyheads. To improve the spatial accuracy of the catches, we used a bathymetric criteria for each taxonomic group based on depth range in which the species is most often encountered. For all taxonomic groups, we summarized the total catch for 25 years for each block and converted pounds to metric tons. Price data (ex-vessel value) per pound for each species was obtained from two sources: Published price tables from CDFW Fish Bulletins (~1931-1962), and the California landing receipts database (~1963-2005). The price per pound was converted to price per metric ton and adjusted for inflation to a base year of 2010 using the Producer Price Index for All Common Foods. To normalize the ex-vessel value we divided the total value by the area of the grid block or depth contour. Note that no catch-related effort information available with this dataset.
