Description:
The primary dataset used in development of the Pew dam database is the National Anthropogenic Barrier Dataset (NABD) which is based on the 2009 National Inventory of Dams (NID) from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Each NABD dam was georeferenced the National Hydrography Dataset Plus version 1 (NHDPlusV1) stream network using satellite imagery from Google Earth. This extensive georeferencing process ensured that dams were correctly located on the stream network for spatial summaries, such as stream connectivity length above dam locations. Three modifications were made to NABD in development of the Pew dam database (see processing steps): 1. Dams were georeferenced to the NHDPlusV2 2. Dams removals from the American Rivers dam removal database were assessed and accounted for in the database. 3. 170 additional large dams were added to the database. The most current version of the NID (without these modifications) is available at https://nid.sec.usace.army.mil/#/
