This coverage contains polygon features representing Late-Successional
Reserves (LSR) and Managed Late Successional Areas (MLSA) of each of the
Region 5 northwest forests (Klamath, Six Rivers, Shasta-Trinity,
Mendocino, Lassen) within the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP). The
objective of LSRs is to protect and enhance conditions of
late-successional and old-growth forest ecosystems, which serve as
habitat for late-successional and old-growth related species including
the northern spotted owl. MLSAs are similar to LSRs but are identified
for certain owl activity centers where regular and frequent fire is a
natural part of the ecosystem and limited timber management practices
are permitted. These LSRs and MLRAs include only the first two elements
of the NWFP LSR system: (1) areas mapped as part of an interacting
reserve system; and (2) LS/OG 1 and 2 areas within Marbled Murrelet Zone
1, and certain owl additions mapped by the Scientific Panel on
Late-Successional Forest Ecosystems (1991). They do not include Element
3, occupied marbled murrelet sites or Element 4, known spotted owl
activity centers.
