Blue Whale Home Ranges, West Coast

Jul 5, 2017 (Last modified May 7, 2021)
Dataset was scientifically peer reviewed
Description:
This layer shows Home Ranges (HR: 90% fixed kernel density distribution) created from blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) satellite tracks with greater than or equal to 30 daily locations inside the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone.

Shading represents the number of individual whale home ranges overlapping in an area. Number of overlapping areas was used as a metric to characterize use by the tagged whales. Tags were deployed off California from 1998–2008.
