Potential natural vegetation - original Kuchler types reclassified to MC1 vegetation types for USFS Region 3 (Arizona, New Mexico, USA)

Nov 8, 2010 (Last modified May 15, 2011)
Description:
This coverage was digitized at the USA EPA from the 1979 Physiographic Regions Map produced by the Bureau of Land Management, which added 10 physiognomic types to Kuchler's 1966 USGS Potential Natural Vegetation map (and similarly differs from the 1985 US Geological Survey map revised by Kuchler and others) The dataset consists of two thematic layers a) Vegetation Form and b) Vegetation Type.  Dataset is a polygon coverage with 6700 meter mean consecutive point spacing.

Kuchler's original vegetation type categories were reclassified to match (in DRAFT form) the MC1 vegetation types utilized in Brendan Rogers' and CBI's MC1-DGVM model runs for Oregon. Arizona and New Mexico (USA).

Reclassifications were as follows (Kuchler, MC1):
Juniper/Pinyon, Temperate Evergreen Needle-Leaf Woodland
Transition between #31 and #37, Temperate Evergreen Needle-Leaf Woodland
Grama/Galleta Steppe, Temperate Shurbland
Pine/Douglas Fir, Temperate Evergreen Needle-Leaf Forest
Southwest Spruce/Fir, Temperate Evergreen Needle-Leaf Forest
