2017 AIS Vessel Traffic by Type

Apr 8, 2021 (Last modified Aug 19, 2022)
Description:
2017 AIS vessel data summarized by BOEM aliquot (1200x1200m polygons) for the West Coast.

AIS points from marinecadastre.gov/ais was converted to points and then spatially joined to the BOEM aliquot grid.

Data is available as All Ships, and by vessel type for Tankers, Cargo Ships, Tugs & Tows, and Fishing Vessels.

Because Vessels smaller than 300 gross tones (~65 ft) are not required to have AIS, smaller fishing vessels are not well represented by the fishing dataset.
