Mediterranean Baja California Important Plant Areas

About

The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) Important Plant Areas (IPA) program seeks to address the problems of dispersed and often incomplete botanical data sets that lead to the lack of proper consideration of botanical biodiversity during environmental impact assessments and planning efforts. The products of the IPA program include a transparent model for conservation value, the output of the model - a "heat map" of value for the conservation of botanical biodiversity, and a map that outlines the most important areas for the conservation of botanical biodiversity, called IPAs, for the entire California Floristic province and adjoining desert regions (within the State of California) from southwestern Oregon to northwestern Baja California. The data included in this group is focused on the Mediterranean region of Baja California, Mexico.

We are developing these products by engaging stakeholders in an iterative botanical data modeling process which ultimately generates a data driven, peer-reviewed map of California IPAs. Through this process, CNPS IPAs foster buy-in from conservation stakeholders across the state, provide tools for smarter conservation planning and proactive advocacy, and match IPA criteria defined by PlantLife International for eventual global recognition.
