Description
A number of areas within the OVSES have special management designations based on the sensitivity of resources contained within them. These areas are depicted on the Special Status Management Areas map available in Data Basin, and are described in detail in this section.

Protected natural areas in the OVSES include public conservation lands managed by federal, state, and regional agencies, and private lands managed as preserves. These areas provide habitat for native plants and animals as well as recreational opportunities and aesthetic value. The protected lands in the OVSES are presented below.
