This time-enabled map displays areas of drought for the lower 48 states for July (mid-peak growing season) for the years 1895 through 2012.
Croplands (corn, soybeans, cotton, and wheat) are presented at 1 sq mi resolution and were derived from the 2011 Cropland Data Layer obtained from United States Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Current and historical (2002 - current) fire perimeters are from GOEMAC's dynamic map service. National historical (2000-2009) fire perimeters are from the Wildland Fire Decision Support System. Map concept is based on the infographic "Drought Extends, Crops Wither" by the NYT found at http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/08/24/us/drought-crops.html?ref=science
