General Site Description
Our Study area was Area#5, which contains Upper Yard, most of the field, the east side of Middle Yard, and hill 37. It extends from the barn, to the parking lot, to the top of varsity hill, to a point behind Hill 37.
We mapped 10 points. Our native plants were the sycamores by the bridge, the black walnut tree by the field, and the mugwort by the creek. The mugwort and sycamore were slightly out of our study area. The mugwort was also not specifically in one point, it stretched up and down the creek.
The solar panels were also slightly out of our study area. They were one of our three man made features. The other two were the amphitheater and the student mailroom. The flag post is very close to the mailroom, and we considered mapping that instead.
Our interesting points were the Geodome, Odin’s Cabin, and Peiter’s puppy. The Geodome is a metal structure by the field. I don’t know anything about Odin’s cabin as I've never been there. Odin mapped it as I am not allowed in Upper Yard. Peiter’s Puppy is a memorial to a student who died in 2002. It is tucked away behind Christopher Barnes’ house. Our topographical feature was the summit of Hill 37. We went under barbed wire to climb it.
The Geology of our map includes QA and QTP. QA means surficial sediments, specifically floodplain and stream channel alluvial gravel, sand, and clay, dissected my active stream channels. QTP means Paso Robles Formation, which is weakly consolidated alluvial sediments composed largely of Monterey Shale detritus; deposited by streams that drained from rising San Rafeal Mountains, Pleistocene and latest pliocene age. The vegetation on our map includes desert scrub in the northwest and blue oak woodland in the southwest.
