This map was created to review data and facilitate conversations about the progress of transitioning to a second growth timber strategy in Southeast Alaska.
This map displays site index for clearcut and pre-commercial thinned (PCT) second growth forest suitable for timber harvest on the Craig, Petersburg, Thorne Bay, Wrangell, and Ketchikan-Misty Ranger Districts of the Tongass National Forest.
Site index (the number of meters trees would be expected to grow in 50 years) is based on the "Transboundary Site Index Mapping" dataset, by Audubon Alaska (published 5/22/2012). Further information about the original site index dataset can be found on the SE Alaska GIS Library website: http://seakgis.alaska.edu/data.
The Conservation Biology Institute performed GIS analysis identifying areas available for harvest based on criteria specified by Mater Engineering and NRDC. Please see descriptions of individual datasets for details on each layer.
You can explore the results on this map, including: 1. Site Index for open FS-roaded suitable second growth areas 2. Site Index for open FS-roaded suitable second growth (overlap) areas
